With nearly half of Toyota’s sells in Japan being hybrid models, the automaker is dedicated to improving this ever-growing segment of their lineup.

Recently, Toyota made major updates to its plug-in hybrid models. Hoping to improve on sales numbers world-wide, the automaker has now giving plug-in hybrids a longer cruising range and quicker charging time to make them more appealing to global buyers.

The Toyota Prius Prime, the company’s first U.S. plug-in hybrid, debuted in late 2016 and has seen slow sales numbers compared to the first Prius model that was introduced in 1997.

Though Toyota is a leader in respect to hybrid model production, the automaker faces major setbacks when it comes to their fuel cells, which are powered by hydrogen and were recently recalled due to defective software causing some vehicles to stop running.

Their new plug-in hybrid models will be pure electric and are estimated to have a 42.4 mile cruising range, which is about five times greater than earlier hybrid models.

Toyota predicts that, by the year 2050, nearly every vehicle on the road will have some form of green technology and that emissions will be reduced by 90% from 2010 levels.
