Hauling or towing materials for work and/or recreation can be a little on the challenging side if you don't know your specs. The more you know, the more you can tow. At Fred Beans Toyota of Flemington, we've written up a 2022 Toyota Tacoma Towing Capacity guide to put you on the right path. We look forward back to hearing from our friends and neighbors near Flemington, Montgomery, and Clifton, NJ.

Your Engine's Performance & Power

When it comes to towing capacity, you must take into consideration which engine configuration you're working with. The 2022 Tacoma comes with two different engine packages that while offering different features, the performance aspects we're concerned with remain essentially the same.

For example, the base engine is 3.5L V6 direct-injection Atkinson-cycle engine with an output of 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. This is a great engine set up for getting the job done, however the advanced option includes additions like: DOHC 24-valve direct-injection Atkinson-cycle, VVT-iW (Variable Value Timing-intelligent Wider Intake), and VVT-I (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Exhaust).

In terms of towing capacity, either engine configuration will do the trick, allowing to further focus on the towing at hand.

Tacoma Towing Capacity

An advantage to towing with a Tacoma is that it comes standard with a towing package which makes the whole experience smooth for you and takes undue stress off the vehicle. This package begins with a Class-IV towing hitch receiver, ATF cooler (not available on manual transmissions), engine oil cooler, power steering cooler, 130-amp alternator, 4- and 7-pin connector with converter and Trailer-Sway Control (TSC) (V6 only).

Now for the hard numbers, the Tacoma has a tongue load of 640 pounds, which is something to consider when going to attach trailers or other carries. But as for its maximum towing capacity, it tops out at 6,400 pounds when properly equipped. This amount of capacity puts it in the mid-range category, meaning you'll be able to bring a lot of what you need with you when you take to the road.

Hazards to Your Towing Capacity

Like all vehicles, they don't exist in a vacuum. That means your Tacoma is going to be exposed to the elements and that's going to have an impact on your towing capacity. Starting with weather and terrain, you might experience more difficulty going over certain terrain, like snowy roads or through high-intensity rainstorms, which may reduce the ability of your towing to perform at normal levels.

Other things to consider is that the more weight added to your Tacoma either via cargo or passengers, is going to weigh it down further, possibly putting strain on the engine. This too can occur when on ascending hills or elevated terrain that pull on the engine and put stress on it as it works harder to perform normally. We advise to always be aware of your route, so you can plan and prepare for moments like these.
